Project Wrap-up: Artwork and Layout for Dante Bucci’s Debut Full-length Album, Kinesthesia

To say that DHD was psyched to take on this design project for longtime friend and past client, Dante Bucci – the world’s most recognized Handpan player – would be an understatement. We’ve been itching to stretch our fine art muscles for awhile, and Dante’s concept for his debut full-length album was just the avenue for this kind of artistic expression. He wanted a vibrant color scheme, clean lines, simple graphics, and a product fans could “interact” with. Dante and DHD sat down, put our heads together, and used the album’s to-be title as our guide:

kin·es·the·sia (kinəsˈTHēZHə)
noun

awareness of the position and movement of the parts of the body by means of sensory organs (proprioceptors) in the muscles and joints.

Our proposed design sought to communicate that Dante knows – without thinking or looking, using only his “sense” and awareness of hands and instruments – precisely where and how to manipulate both himself and the Handpan(s) in order to produce his signature transfixing melodies and rhythms. The lines descending from the fingertips on the cover continue around the back, on to an inner folded panel, and straight through to the other side, terminating with sketches of four Handpans.

Four Handpans are featured on this album: PANArt Dm Pentatonic, PANArt “”Melog Selisir,” PANArt “Kourd-Atar,” and BEllArt “Jibuk.” For the most die-hard Handpan players and fans, we included a key on both the inside flap and on the back, with the former indicating the Handpan make/brand, and the latter (color-associated) key summarizing the scales and center note of the each Hanpan. The markers next to each track listed represent not only the Handpans played, but the order in which they are arranged in Dante’s lap!

A quick look (and perhaps slight gentle rotation!) of the disc itself resting in its tray echoes the cover art, and lifting it out reveals another surprise: the headstocks of stringed instruments, symbolizing the inclusion of several stringed instruments to create the unique sound of Dante’s latest masterpiece, in an abstract yet incorporated way.

We are so happy with the final product, and it sounds even cooler than it looks (check out a sample, below)! We hope you’ll pick up a copy as soon as it becomes available, and that you’ll join us in celebrating Dante’s latest musical accomplishment at his album release show in October!
