A Birth Story: Welcoming Judah

This week, I had the pleasure and honor of capturing the moments leading up to and following the birth of baby Judah, the fourth son (and second brunette child!) of Tommi and Micah. This is a new area of photography for DHD – one that I have been hoping to have the opportunity to explore – so I was thrilled when Tommi sent her inquiry.

Judah was born at The Birth Center in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; it provided a wonderful, home-like, mother-centered atmosphere for welcoming littles into the world. Tommi’s birth team – led by her husband – was incredibly supportive, and the peaceful, positive energy in the room was immediately apparent upon my arrival.

Following Judah’s peaceful arrival at 11:05 the morning of October 8 (in the bathroom! Tommi has had water births in the past and getting in the tub initiated a sort of Pavlovian response…) decadent handmade chocolate truffles were shared and I was invited to enjoy an incredible breakfast casserole with Tommi, Micah, and their new son. I truly feel bonded to them after sharing such an awe-inspiring experience with them, and I’m lucky and honored they asked me and trusted me to capture the moments of this special day for them.

Congratulations, Tommi and Micah and the very warmest welcome to sweet Judah!

Project Wrap-up: Artwork and Layout for Dante Bucci’s Debut Full-length Album, Kinesthesia

To say that DHD was psyched to take on this design project for longtime friend and past client, Dante Bucci – the world’s most recognized Handpan player – would be an understatement. We’ve been itching to stretch our fine art muscles for awhile, and Dante’s concept for his debut full-length album was just the avenue for this kind of artistic expression. He wanted a vibrant color scheme, clean lines, simple graphics, and a product fans could “interact” with. Dante and DHD sat down, put our heads together, and used the album’s to-be title as our guide:

kin·es·the·sia (kinəsˈTHēZHə)

awareness of the position and movement of the parts of the body by means of sensory organs (proprioceptors) in the muscles and joints.

Our proposed design sought to communicate that Dante knows – without thinking or looking, using only his “sense” and awareness of hands and instruments – precisely where and how to manipulate both himself and the Handpan(s) in order to produce his signature transfixing melodies and rhythms. The lines descending from the fingertips on the cover continue around the back, on to an inner folded panel, and straight through to the other side, terminating with sketches of four Handpans.

Four Handpans are featured on this album: PANArt Dm Pentatonic, PANArt “”Melog Selisir,” PANArt “Kourd-Atar,” and BEllArt “Jibuk.” For the most die-hard Handpan players and fans, we included a key on both the inside flap and on the back, with the former indicating the Handpan make/brand, and the latter (color-associated) key summarizing the scales and center note of the each Hanpan. The markers next to each track listed represent not only the Handpans played, but the order in which they are arranged in Dante’s lap!

A quick look (and perhaps slight gentle rotation!) of the disc itself resting in its tray echoes the cover art, and lifting it out reveals another surprise: the headstocks of stringed instruments, symbolizing the inclusion of several stringed instruments to create the unique sound of Dante’s latest masterpiece, in an abstract yet incorporated way.

We are so happy with the final product, and it sounds even cooler than it looks (check out a sample, below)! We hope you’ll pick up a copy as soon as it becomes available, and that you’ll join us in celebrating Dante’s latest musical accomplishment at his album release show in October!

Project Wrap-up: Artwork and Layout for Richie Allen Buchborn’s Debut EP

DHD was recently hired by local musician Richie Allen Buchborn to design the layout of his upcoming self-titled EP and add an artistic touch to photography by Joshua A. Steingard for the project. We’ve worked on a half-dozen of these CD design projects now, and we’re excited that Richie brought us board to help with his big debut. We hope our Philadelphia friends will join us for the Richie’s big release on September 15! Joining Richie will be Gavilan and Joshua Popejoy, the latter of whom has been a long-time client and supporter of DHD.

Sweet Baby Ava

We’ve got a brand new website and a whole bunch of work to share from the last year!

Back in February, DHD had the pleasure of photographing one of the sweetest newborns, Ava. We were so excited to find a house flooded with morning light (and love! and awesome parents!) upon arrival. The big bowed window in the family’s living room provided the perfect make-shift studio for Ava’s photographic debut.

pic 1collage 1Ava’s “brothers” – two Eskimo dogs – stayed close by the whole time, already quite protective of the new member of the family. During shooting, feeding, and gentle shushing, her canine companions stayed close by the whole time.

Ava preferred to remain in-arms for most of the shoot; the great thing about newborn sessions is that they all differ so greatly! Sometimes we get to “costume” and post our sweet little clients à la Anne Geddes, and other times we have the opportunity to flex our photo journalistic muscles and also get some sweet details of parents doing what they spend most of the first few weeks doing – snuggling their new dd

Of course, when we get the opportunity to arrange a tutu around a snoozing baby and quickly slip a bow on her teeny head, we run with it! Little Ava wasn’t too fond of the “posing” game, but we did manage to snap a couple of her un-swaddled.

It was such a pleasure making beautiful photographs and capturing the details of newborn awesomeness for this amazing family. We look forward to freezing more moments in time for them as little Ava grows!
